Three common quiz sizes

These assume a 30-second timer and a few minutes for joining at the start.

A 20-minute warm-up
One round of about ten questions. Suits a dinner party between courses or the start of a game night.
A 45-minute quiz
Two or three rounds, around twenty-five questions in total, with a short break in the middle.
A full quiz night
Four rounds of eight to ten questions over about ninety minutes, including a longer break and a relaxed finish.

Work out your own number

Five minutes with a calculator saves a rushed final round.

  1. Take the total time

Subtract ten minutes for joining, a practice question and the final scores.

  2. Remove the breaks

Allow five to ten minutes between rounds for drinks and conversation.

  3. Divide by the question time

Use one and a half minutes per question, or two minutes when reveals come with stories.

  4. Round down

Spare time at the end is easy to use. Missing time means cutting a guest’s question.

When guests write the questions

In a contributed Playloop game, the total grows with the number of contributors. Set how many questions each person writes so the quiz fits the evening: two each from twelve guests is already twenty-four questions.

Timers can be shorter for quick recognition questions and longer for pictures or ordering questions. Keep most questions at a similar length so the pace feels steady.

Bring a question. Or just yourself.
